This is a wonderful set of two Civil War era songs, “Two Brothers” and “Tentin’ Tonight”. The first in the set tells of two brothers, “one wore blue, the other wore gray, one came home and one stayed behind”. It calls for a strong four-part divisi, though unison singing is also incorporated. The music is very tonal and not difficult to pull off successfully. The gem of the set is “Tentin’ Tonight”, which I have used by itself. The text is extremely relevant: “Many are the hearts that are weary tonight, waitin’ for the war to cease, waiting for the dawn of peace”. The texture goes from three-part to five-part singing and calls on the low bass to sing a low D flat at the end. This is a wonderful score to work expressive, poignant singing.
